Toroni was established by settlers from Chalkida in the 8th century BC and grew to be a significant city in both Sithonia and all of Halkidiki. It minted its own coins and was a member of the Athenian Alliance. During the Byzantine period, the area was associated with Agioritis monasteries. In the 19th century, the strong walls and other buildings were demolished when the Turks repurposed the granite stones to pave major streets in Constantinople and Thessaloniki. Thucydides gives details of the Spartan fortification at Lekythos and mentions that

there was a temple of the Goddess Athena there. The ruins of the wall of Lekythos, one of the two citadels of ancient Toroni. It is also worth visiting the site of the early Christian three-aisled basilica of Agios Athanasios, a 5th century building, which was destroyed by fire in the 6th century. A new one was built in its place, but it was destroyed again and today the mosaic of the middle aisle is preserved.
